Banned Literary Dept.

Briar Road is more than just clothes - it’s about community, culture, and the stories that inspire us. Our book club, Banned Literary Dept. (BLD), is an extension of the brand and exists to explore literature that cultivates curiosity, intellect, and purpose.

BLD channels the mystery of a collegiate secret society, blending intellectual defiance with an air of exclusivity. Rooted in the allure of forbidden books, suppressed ideas, and countercultural thought, Banned Literary Dept. cultivates a world where literature is both an act of defiance and a badge of belonging, blurring the line between academia and underground rebellion.

At BLD, we explore thought-provoking and occasionally challenged books and ideas, from classics to contemporary voices, that inspire dialogue and foster a diverse community of readers and new perspectives.

Crinkled paper note taped to a surface with handwritten text reading “Every Family Has Secrets,” representing the Briar Road Banned Literary Dept theme of mystery and hidden stories.

As the philanthropic arm of Briar Road, the Banned Literary Dept. exists to champion literacy, creative freedom, and cultural dialogue. We believe that stories, especially those once silenced, have the power to challenge convention, spark empathy, and inspire meaningful change. BLD works to create a community that values both intellect and imagination, proving that style and purpose can coexist.

To make connecting easier and more interactive, BLD has joined Fable, a social reading app designed for modern readers. There, you can read alongside us, join discussions, and discover both banned and beloved books that continue to shape our collective imagination. Visit Join Us to become a member or download the Fable app to start exploring with us.

Beyond the First Day

The school year doesn’t begin and end in August. Students need more than supplies at the start of the school
year. They need consistent access to the resources that support learning every single day.

Through Beyond the First Day, we are supporting students across Jamestown Public Schools by providing:

  • fully stocked backpacks
  • care closet resources including food, hygiene, and daily essentials
  • access to books and reading materials

This initiative is focused on removing barriers to learning so students can focus on what matters most.
